MTC proposing 5-to-10 cent transportation gas tax

OAKLAND — A regional transportation commission is floating the idea of adding a 5- or 10-cent gas tax on the November ballot, but some public officials are worried it will put other bond and sales tax measures at risk.
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission, a public agency comprised of local elected officials that oversees regional transportation planning and funding, introduced the idea as a way to drum up additional funds for local street and road repair in the wake of dwindling state gas tax revenues and mounting maintenance needs, said Randy Rentschler, the MTC’s director of legislation and public affairs.
