Apple. Google. Facebook. Microsoft. Ford. These iconic American companies started out as small businesses, sometimes run from in a garage or a college dorm room. That’s what we like to keep in mind as we celebrate National Small Business Week.

Although a cliche, it’s true that small businesses generate most new jobs in America. Especially important are new businesses. “Firm start-ups account for only 3 percent of employment but almost 20 percent of gross job creation,” according to a 2010 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research. “[T]he fastest growing continuing firms are young firms under the age of five.”
