Consumer Alliance for a Strong Economy gives Senator Florez opportunity to respond to advertisements

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, November 15, 2004
(Sacramento, CA) – The Consumer Alliance for a Strong Economy has offered Senator Dean Florez an opportunity to respond to advertisements running in the Fresno and Bakersfield media markets urging people to call the Senator’s District Office to ask about his voting record.

In a letter sent to Senator Florez this morning, the Consumer Alliance for a Strong Economy offered to post the Senator’s answers to six questions on its website. The letter was sent to Senator Florez after it was reported in the media that he will be introducing legislation aimed at silencing groups that publicize the voting records of legislators.

“The Consumer Alliance for a Strong Economy will continue to publicize Senator Florez’s voting record and to educate the people of the Central Valley about important public policy measures. While we are disturbed that Senator Florez is using threats to silence our voice, we will not stop our educational effort,” said CASE spokesman Dave Gilliard.

The letter sent to Senator Florez provides him the opportunity to have his responses posted on the CASE website. It asks Senator Florez to respond to six specific questions centered on statements made in television and radio advertisements currently running in the Fresno and Bakersfield media markets.

Gilliard added, “Senator Florez has gone to the trouble of holding press conferences, and now he is attempting to introduce legislation to force organizations like the Consumer Alliance for a Strong Economy into silence. Our organization is a public education group, and we will continue to let people know about the records and policy platforms of their public officials.”

Formed in 2002, the Consumer Alliance for a Strong Economy has nearly 10,000 supporters and members from all across California. The group’s efforts have been instrumental in the policy discussions over issues such as minimum wage increases, universal healthcare coverage, and free-market economic policies.
