California doesn’t need new taxes to pave its roads: Matthew Harper

A recent editorial by the Los Angeles News Group (“Fix fuel tax in crisis so state can get moving,” March 10) attempted to lay blame for California’s bad roads at the feet of those who won’t raise taxes. Earlier this year, the California Transportation Commission sent a letter to lawmakers describing which transportation projects would be delayed or canceled if new taxes aren’t put in place for transportation funding. In reality, the California Transportation Commission’s letter is nothing more than a political threat that ignores the real issue.

In January, the governor made new gas taxes and vehicle registration fees a part of his proposed budget, in an attempt to get these highly unpopular proposals through the Legislature. That is why I introduced the Fix Our Roads Act of 2016 which would allow voters to state whether or not the Legislature should increase taxes on gasoline and vehicle registration, as the governor proposed.
